La
Fête Des Rois
(Festival of Kings)
La Fête des Rois is an old French Tradition dating back
to 1311.
The Eveque (Cardinal) of
Amiens, North of France, decided to hold a drawing.
The winner would be
crowned King of the City for an entire day. Giving
someone this honor was thought to settle the unrest
among the people under the King’s rule.
Then bakeries decided to celebrate this day with a
special cake. The cake is called a Galette des Rois.
Different regions had different shapes. In the North,
the cake is round.
In the South it is a
crown of fruit confit (fruit cooked in sugar). In the
East of France it is a Cougeloff in the shape of a Lys
flower, which is the symbol of Royalty.
A feve bean was used in the cake. It is a symbol of
fertility. There was one bean per cake. The French
Tradition involved the whole family. One of the children
would be selected to close his eyes, while the mother
cut the cake. For every slice she would ask him who it
was for. The member of the family who found the feve
bean would be King for the Day and choose his own Queen.
Then, in 1875, instead of the beans, they used Limoges
porcelin minatures. Still called feve, some of them were
very priceless and people collect them in France.
In honor of this tradition, we are celebrating on
January 22-24 (Thurs- Sat). We have prepared a special
menu which includes a Galette des Rois. Each cake will
have a feve and the King will be crowned with a special
crown boasting the Lys Flower. It is fun for the whole
family.
